What is SPLENDA®?

SPLENDA® is a low calorie sugar alternative that is made with sucralose. It’s available in tablet form (Sweet Minis, which are ideal for drinks) as well as SPLENDA® Granulated which can be used spoon for spoon just like sugar, sprinkled over food or stirred into drinks, and is great for cooking and baking. (See our recipes pages for inspiring ideas and delicious everyday dishes.)

What does SPLENDA® contain?

SPLENDA® Granulated contains sucralose (the sweetener), and maltodextrin (to give it volume). SPLENDA® Sweet Minis contain sucralose, lactose (the carrier), leucine and cellulose gum (a binding agent).

What is sucralose?

Sucralose is the generic name for the sweetener in SPLENDA® Sugar Alternative. Sucralose is an intense, high quality sweetener that is made through a patented process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no-calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The result is a very stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but without its calories.

What’s so good about sucralose?

Sucralose is the sweetener of choice in SPLENDA® because it has a delicious, sweet taste and also keeps its sweetness and flavour when heated, making SPLENDA® Granulated great for cooking and baking.

Is SPLENDA® natural?

No, like many processed foods and other artificial sweeteners, SPLENDA® and sucralose are not natural.

How is sucralose made?

Sucralose is made through a process that converts sugar to a calorie-free, carbohydrate-free sweetener. This process creates a very stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but does not break down in your body to provide carbs or calories.

How do I know SPLENDA® (sucralose) is safe?

SPLENDA® is safe. It can be used as your everyday, every occasion sweetener. Sucralose, the sweetener in SPLENDA® has been evaluated and approved by the UK and EU authorities and numerous other regulatory agencies around the world, and has been proved to be safe and without any side effects. Sucralose is one of the most extensively tested food ingredients and is now sold in more than 80 countries and is used in more than 4,000 products. There have been over 100 studies conducted over the past 20 years on the safety of sucralose.

Is SPLENDA® safe for everyone, including children?

While SPLENDA® is perfectly safe for the whole family, we don’t recommend it for infants and small children under 3 years of age as they need the calories from carbohydrates, including sugars, for healthy growth.

For children with insulin-dependent diabetes, SPLENDA® can be useful in enabling them to enjoy sweet treats while sticking to their prescribed diets – speak to your Healthcare Professional about dietary advice for diabetics.

Is SPLENDA® suitable for diabetics?

SPLENDA® is also suitable for people with diabetes as part of their healthy everyday diet. Spoon for spoon, SPLENDA® Granulated is as sweet as sugar but has just 0.5g carbohydrate with 2 Calories per teaspoon (from the maltodextrin) and this should be taken into account as part of the daily intake.

Each SPLENDA® Sweet Mini also has the same sweetness as a 5g teaspoon of sugar and is calorie free!

How is SPLENDA® digested?

Studies show that most of the sweetener in SPLENDA®, sucralose, simply passes straight through the digestive system without being broken down. Any that remains has no effect on the metabolism, does not accumulate in the body, and is either excreted or eventually flushed away. The other ingredients in SPLENDA®, lactose (the carrier), leucine and cellulose gum (a binding agent) are absorbed in the normal way.

Does SPLENDA® cause tooth decay?

SPLENDA® has no more effect on teeth than any other form of carbohydrates or sugar.

Have people experienced any side effects as a result of using SPLENDA®?

No. Sucralose, the sweetener in SPLENDA® Sugar Alternative has been approved for use in food and drinks in over 80 countries, and used by millions of people since 1991. It can be used and enjoyed safely by the whole family.

However, people who are lactose intolerant should note that SPLENDA® Sweet Minis contain lactose as a bulking agent. Each SPLENDA® Sweet Mini contains less than 0.05g of lactose.

Is SPLENDA® ok to use during pregnancy and /or breast-feeding?

Yes. SPLENDA® can be used and enjoyed by anyone, including pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers. SPLENDA® can be part of a healthy pre- and post-natal diet, but we would always recommend that women who are pregnant or breast-feeding talk to their doctors or dieticians about their special nutritional needs.
