When you replace sugar with SPLENDA® Granulated, it is important to understand the many roles sugar or other sweeteners (such as honey) have in cooking and baking. This knowledge will help you determine which of your favourite recipes can be easily adapted for use with SPLENDA® Granulated.
We all know that sugar and other caloric sweeteners, such as honey, brown sugar, and maple syrup add sweetness in recipes. Beyond providing sweetness they also achieve the following:
- They give structure, texture and volume.
- Sweeteners can caramelise and add browning.
- They help retain moistness in baked goods.
- They provide a preservative quality, keeping foods fresh for a longer time.
In general, SPLENDA® Granulated works best in recipes where the main role is to provide a sweet taste. For example, SPLENDA® Granulated works well in fruit pie fillings, cheesecakes, sweet sauces and glazes. Many other recipes can be readily adapted as described as in our Cooking and Baking Tips.
In recipes where the amount of sugar is quite high or where browning is a vital element, such as crème brulée, we do not recommend complete substitution of sugar with SPLENDA® Granulated.
